This unique and delicious fruit is now in season…and in stores until January

Toronto, December 5th, 2014 – There’s a new fruit at your local supermarket, and while it may look similar to other persimmons you’ve seen before, nothing is quite like a Persimon® persimmon.

Grown exclusively in the Ribera del Xúquer Valley near Valencia in Spain, sweet Persimon® are the only persimmons in the world to be certified and protected by the Denomination of Origin designation, a quality seal recognized by the European Union. It guarantees that trademarked Persimon® are grown to the highest possible standards.

Persimon® are sweet and ripe when they are still firm to the touch. This is a departure from similar-looking hachiya persimmons, which need to be eaten when fully soft and ripe to avoid astringency — that sharp, harsh taste of unripe fruit (like an unripe banana). The Persimon® persimmons are super sweet and ready to eat as soon as you purchase them.

Bonus: with no seeds or pits and no peeling required, Persimon® are so convenient and easy. They can be eaten out-of-hand and make the perfect lunchbox snack for children. They have a sweet, delicate flavour similar to cantaloupe, peach or mango.

Tasty and healthy

“The Persimon® is my favourite variety of persimmons because it’s always ripe and ready,” says registered dietitian Cara Rosenbloom, who loves adding cubes of Persimon® to her morning oatmeal, and makes an amazing Persimon® and pineapple salsa.

“In addition to being sweet and delicious, the Persimon® also boasts an impressive six grams of fibre per fruit – that’s double the amount of fibre found in a peach, banana or orange,” says Rosenbloom. Persimon® are a source of vitamins A and C, and contain the antioxidants beta carotene, lutein and lycopene. “These antioxidants, along with vitamins A and C, may help protect cells from the damaging action of free radicals, which lead to heart disease, cancer and aging,” says Rosenbloom.

Select and store

Rare and precious, Persimon® from Ribera del Xúquer began arriving in Canada in mid-October and are available through January, and sometimes into February. Their limited availability makes them even more special, which is why you must seize the opportunity when they are in market.

Look for bright orange Persimon®, which are longer and larger than other varieties of persimmon. Choose a Persimon® that is firm to the touch – it is perfect for eating right away. Sometimes they are speckled with natural sugar freckles, which appear as the fruit ripens (just like bananas). These freckles are a sign of extra sweetness.

Store Persimon® at room temperature in a bowl or on the counter away from other fruits, which will cause them to ripen too quickly.

You can enjoy the refreshingly sweet flavour with the skin on, or you can peel it first. Eat it fresh out-of-hand, or slice the fruit horizontally to reveal a unique star pattern in the flesh – it’s as beautiful as it is delicious.
